What is dangerous is the ongoing bullying and violence perpetrated by firefighters towards other firefighters. This is what contributes to the high number of suicides. I've seen firefighters celebrate the same day a "hated" co-worker committed suicide. Some firefighter with PTSD who are trying to come back to work are ostracised by other firefighters and management. Many don't trust the peer support team as some of them gossip and spread personal details with their crew members. Many female firefighters have left the service due to sexual harassment, physical assault and rape. It is endemic in both North American and European fire houses. Google "harassment female firefighter". The first step in preventing suicide is for the IAFF to acknowledge and address bullying, harassment and toxic masculinity on the job. As well, disabled firefighters need to be celebrated and respected as much as the active ones. Disabled firefighters are not disposable. The IAFF, should offer PTSD treatment to members who are unable to return to work but need to learn how to cope with their life long work related illness.

The fire chief on the scene made a major mistake by sending in crews in a building thats unsafe to enter. in fire like this and spreading so fast you don't send in fire men to fight the fire you fight the fire from the outside so the death of the 9 fire men was to blame on the firechief in fact he send those men to there death. the building was lost anyway so why risk lives to save something that can't be safed. The US firedepartment and his chiefs have lot to learn but i doubt they ever will.

2 in and 2 out should be removed. If the standard is going to require 4 to a truck, the extra personnel would be better utilized for interior fire fighting rather than outside. Data shows, RIT teams to be an in effective use of personnel.

Volunteer Depts should be exempt. One reason, the vehicles don't get the same wear in rural areas. 2- Volunteers aren't paid, OSHA has no jurisdiction over volunteers

Pay volunteer fire fighters to train during their probation just like tech schools for service members. Where to get the money?...... Federal. Its a national problem if these rules are instituted and volunteers just all walk away.

In addition well before the hurricane strikes be prepared to evacuate if needed especially if you live near the beach or coast or any other bodies of water or if you live in a mobile home or trailer. Do not attempt to ride out the hurricane inside your home if it is a mobile home or trailer or if you live near bodies of water such as beaches or coasts. Remember mobile homes and trailers stand no chance against hurricane force winds no matter how powerful they are and in addition if you remain near bodies of water you run the risk of being injured or killed by storm surges or floods. If officials tell you and your family to evacuate do so immediately as they are doing so to keep you and other people safe. By disobeying evacuation orders you not only put you and your family in danger but you will also endanger first responders who will attempt to rescue you. Countless people and first responders have been killed due to people refusing to follow an evacuation order. Once you have evacuated follow posted evacuation routes and get to a safer place such as a sturdy building that is on higher ground and is able to protect you from the hurricane. If you come upon a flooded area or road do not go through it but instead turn around and find another route that is safe.

Can the IAFF provide an explanation on why they agree with the proposed changes in language surrounding 2 in 2 out? Manny firefighters are asking about this and there seems to be no clear answer from the IAFF

Sean Decrane's comment "written in blood" is the point of all this. At every turn policy, procedure, doctrine is written reactively after a firefighter or firefighters have made the ultimate sacrifice. Each of the rules and regulations has a name associated with it and we'd probably get less pushback if instead of using a typical bulleted format (i.e. Section V, paragraph 2, subsection b.) we put the name "Smith's Rule", "Smedlap's Procedure" in front of it to align it with the person(s) who died in its creation. We use it in training (i.e. Nance Drill) so why not with the feds? Maybe crosswalk each section to the NIOSH Report that followed. Bottom line, keep pushing. Don't the LCD drive this bus.

All the mention of life safety, UL FSRI, training, data, knowledge, the ability to make tactical decisions…and you won’t come out and address the elephant in the room that is 2-in/2-out. From my view, the vast majority of the scrutiny has been based on the “known victim”. Look at the data of rescues when no report or negative reports are made, how many firefighters have been injured or killed before 2-out is available? Put the data up. Loretta Pickard died on the phone waiting for 2-out.

Recruitment & Retention are a Major occurrence. Some of these proposals will strain the Volunteer Depts. Not to mention what impact this would have on Taxpayers. This has to be amended otherwise there will be loss of Departments . RETHINK this

Another layer of over complication that takes away from real functional training. Requiring us to stare at a computer screen for however many hours a year is not functional training. Get osha the hell out of the fire service and restrict the Nfpa.

All for improvements to annual physicals and I know these things could use an upgrade. My question is, does this sneak in a vaccine mandate for all firefighters? The document is ambiguous about this but it does say "OSHA therefore preliminarily finds justification to promulgate a standard which REQUIRES protective equipment and practices to address exposures to infectious disease." in section where they talk about physicals and vaccines.

Can someone link where the data is that shows firefighters are getting hurt at the beginning of fire like she said around 33 minutes? In my experience it is the complete opposite.

Until theres mandated medical retirement so ff dont work almost a whole career just to get run off before retirement these are jusr means for cities to run off higher salary employees to replace them with younger low salary ones. Our dr holds us to the standards but the department doesn’t meet or do any of the preventative requirements.
